“A robotic teddy bear developed at MIT combines robot interactivity with a kind of weird telepresence. The bear, called the “Huggable,” has 1,500 skin sensors, actuators for movement, microphones in its ears, cameras in its eyes and a speaker in its mouth. Inside is a PC connected to the Internet over Wi-Fi. It can operated in fully autonomous mode, where it interacts without human intervention. More interestingly, it has a semi-autonomous mode, where it serves also as a conduit for interaction with someone over the Internet.”

I saw an early prototype for the AnyBots robots under development about two years ago in the TechShop, and the current AnyBots headquarters is two blocks away from my studio.

Robot Explosion

Robots are finally sufficiently capable that they can be useful outside of specialized environments (such as auto plants). I expect to see an explosion of robots in the next 5 years.

Violin playing robot
07-Dec-07
Dec. 6 – The race to produce the first practical home robots has heated up with Toyota’s new range – including one that plays the violin.
In a demonstration of the new robots’ achievements, Toyota brought out a 152 cm (5 ft), two-legged robot dextrous enough to play a few stanzas — complete with vibrato sound — from Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance”, a popular tune at graduation ceremonies.
Toyota said it planned to further advance the robot’s dexterity to enable it to use tools and assist with domestic duties and nursing and medical care. The robot has 17 joints in both of its hands and arms now.
