Silent discos, in which people dance to music played through personal headphones rather than speakers, was once the preserve of music festivals and special club nights.

But now it is becoming increasingly popular at weddings and private parties, enabling teenagers to dance to their hearts’ content without keeping their parents or the neighbours awake all night.

And the fact that dancers can choose between two or more different channels, means classical music fans waltzing to Schubert can in theory share the same floor as ravers partying to hard-core techno music.

Its origins are said to date back to an obscure 1969 Finnish sci-fi film called Ruusujen aika, but its popularity has soared in Britain since it appeared at the 2005 Glastonbury music festival.

It now appears to be entering the mainstream – not unlike karaoke – with home silent disco kits available for about £250.

This year’s Junkstock party will be held on July 10th from 11am-5pm in Golden Gate Park, at Marx Meadow. Junkstock is an absolutely FREE, family friendly event.

We will feature an acoustic stage with great performers who encompass the vision that instruments, composition and performance come from, sometimes, unexpected places.

The day will include workshops—take things out of your recycle bin and make your own instruments or make household or hardware store items sing (or clank whatever the case may be)!
Music is everywhere, go out and grab it!

We strive to shatter the myth that creating music is an elite pursuit; whether you play a plastic bucket or a thousand dollar guitar, expressing yourself and your soul through sound is what it’s all about. We want all who attend Junkstock to leave empowered by the fact that they can play an instrument, whether it’s a voice, a guitar or a tuna can.

Who we are: We’re a grass roots collective of musicians, crafters, makers, artists, teachers, makers and do-ers, who are excited about spreading the knowledge and fun inherent in Do It Yourself music making.
